Pathways

Our pathway is a simple way of describing the combinations of subjects and qualifications we take each year and how these are related to and influenced by what we have done before and what we want to do in the future.

It is really important to push ourselves to progress each year so, if we have just managed to complete a National 5 or SCQF level 5 qualification, we should be looking for Higher or SCQF level 6 options. The same can be said when we leave school. If we have completed a number of SCQF level 5 qualifications, we should be looking for a post school destination featuring SCQF level 6 or Higher (National Certificate Courses, Modern Apprenticeships etc.)

Plan your pathway across S4, S5 and S6. This might help alleviate any problems with subject clashes. For example, if two potential options sit in the same column this year, you could plan to revisit one in future.

Don’t forget, your curriculum is not just your subjects and qualifications. Will your options provide enough opportunity to get involved in other activities and events in and around the school? Will they provide balance in terms of the potential workload, and types of learning that will take place.

Example pathways are shown below.

The Scottish Credits and Qualifications Framework (SCQF)

All qualifications that are offered by the school can be found on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework. The framework has 12 levels with each increase in level representing greater challenge and depth of study.

The framework is useful in making sure you consider your progression towards a particular level of qualification. So, if you have achieved level 5 in a particular subject area, you will look to continue developing your experience here by opting for similar level 6 courses.

The framework is also useful for displaying the parity between qualifications. So, for example, a level 6 NPA, should hold similar level of challenge and depth as a Higher qualification.
